According to Dart Center, a project of Columbia University’s School of Journalism, an estimated of “165,000 people died in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam’s re-education camps”. So far VAF has been able to recover of just 507 and brought them home to their families. Exactly how many are still languishing out there is unknown. As time passing by, the further we waited the harder for us to be able to find because of land development and changing topography of the landscape as well as the memory of the local folks to help us locate their graves. Moreover, we need their surviving relatives’ DNA to help identify these remains and as time goes on, many of these surviving families are less and less.

Bien Hoa National Cemetery is once covered an area of over 300 acres but now reduced to just over hecta but now reduced to just over 60 acres. There is an estimate of 18,643 graves. Of these 18,643 graves, about 2000 of them have been relocated by their own families. About 14,060 have been restored by various organizations & individuals including VAF. On-going maintenances & repairs are needed. This includes clearing and trimming over grown trees, shrubs and grasses. A national cemetery of this size costs millions to preserve and maintain. So your every dollar counts. Once again, the whole VAF executive team is working without pay and many of us spent our own money to do what we do.

Even though our academic scholarship is solely based on the financial need of the child, we will set priority for children and grandchildren of those whose parents died in the war and post war re-education camps. You as the donor will receive a full financial report of the awards including all the names of the awardees. If you wish to work directly with children, that is also an option available to you as the donor.
